Research Interests & Goals:
Dr. Stein’s program of research uses a developmental psychopathology perspective to understand the development of ethnic minority youth, with a particular focus on the effects of discrimination and family cultural values. One of line of research examines the specific mechanisms which link experiences of discrimination with the development of depressive symptoms in Latino and African American youth. A second line of research uses the integrative model of child development to study how familial cultural values serve as a developmental niche that promote the positive adaptation in ethnic minority youth. Finally, a third line of research examines the cultural factors that influence mental health treatment and access.
